Understanding Endometriosis
Understanding Endometriosis - What’s it about?
Endometriosis is a chronic, incurable disease that affects 1 in 10 women. Symptoms include extreme cramping, bloating, excessive bleeding, infertility and more. The average diagnosis time for endometriosis is 8 to 12 years despite it being named as one of the "Top 20 Most Painful Conditions." Many doctors hesitate to diagnosis and tend to tell women that it's just a "normal period." (If you're missing work/school - it's classified as an abnormal period) I hope that through this series, I can bring more knowledge and advocacy for endometriosis. It's so important that we find a cure and that we speak out for the women who suffer with this disease.
During my junior year of college, after years of being a “medical mystery,” I was diagnosed with stage 4 endometriosis. Many doctors prior to junior year ignored my cries for help and classified my pain as a “normal period.” During Thanksgiving break and spring break, I underwent two surgeries to remove my endometriosis. This sent me into a year of research, connecting with other women with the same issue, and beginning to feel a fire of advocacy. During my senior year, I created this self-portrait series as a representation of what endometriosis is, what it feels like and how it operates. It has since received “Dean’s Choice Award” during the Research and Creative Endeavor Symposium at PFW, “Chronic and Incurable” has shown in a gallery, and it was presented to the PFW Honor’s Council and received high praise. I hope to eventually exhibit the whole series at once and bring awareness to this chronic disease.
